Each panel 14”x38” - Measures 46”x38” when all three panels hang together spaced 2” apart - Encaustic, shellac burn & integrated vintage map, framed in natural oak
River Logic is a three-panel encaustic work created over a vintage map of eastern Ontario, Canada, near the former Carleton County and West Carleton–March area west of Ottawa. The piece began with the river itself: its organic bends, branching movement, and beautiful negative spaces cutting through the land. Beneath and around it, the map’s precise survey lines, roads, townships, and place names create a quiet tension between human structure and the river’s ancient, more fluid path.
Layers of beeswax, pigment, shellac burn, and mixed media transform the original map into a luminous abstract landscape. Cool blues move across the surface like water and weather, while areas of preserved gridwork remain visible beneath the wax. The contrast between structure and flow becomes the heart of the piece: human order meeting the natural intelligence of the land.
Displayed as a vertical triptych, the work has both presence and delicacy. It invites close looking, revealing fragments of place, line, water, and negative space. The result is a textured meditation on maps, memory, and the way rivers shape the stories we try to contain.
Shipping within the United States is included. For international shipping, please contact me directly prior to purchasing so we can create a custom shipping plan based on the size, destination, and delivery needs of the piece.
